Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTI)

Introduction

TCPS implemented a targeted Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTI) action plan to reengage hospital and physician leadership and rapidly drive improvement to prevent CAUTIs, with support from the THA Board of Directors and Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Society. TCPS and the CMO Society worked together to target CAUTI rapid improvement. The group identified recommendations for change that address both clinical changes in practice and execution strategies, as well as organizational leadership support and operational strategies. TCPS expanded data collection to hospital units outside of intensive care in 2014 and supported hospitals in the data collection and submission of outcomes data. TCPS adopted the “On the CUSP: Stop CAUTI” program as the improvement model, utilizing a CAUTI bundle of strategies defined in the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines for CAUTI prevention and the Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Council (HICPAC) recommendations.
