Introduction

To the average person, hospitals may seem like safe places to work. But, according to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), hospitals (in 2013) reported 6.4 worker illnesses or injuries for every 100 full-time employees, a rate almost twice that of private industry, including manufacturing and construction. This represented over $2 billion in workers compensation losses. In addition to avoiding financial and operational challenges, hospitals with a strong worker safety culture are more likely to have better customer satisfaction and patient safety outcomes.
