Recommitment and Transparency

In December 2009, the Tennessee Hospital Association (THA) board of directors approved a board aim of zero preventable harm.  In support of this commitment, TN hospitals submit monthly performance data to the Tennessee Center for Patient Safety (TCPS).   The one-year reduction across 2010 is a decrease in adult/pediatric central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) by 35%, a decrease in neonatal CLABSI by 17%, and a decrease in hospital-onset MRSA by 3%.  We have made real progress, but the goal remains far ahead of us.

The strong dedication to achieving the aim was evidenced again at THA’s board retreat this spring, where the directors recommitted to the aim. Recommitment keeps our collective eye on the goal—zero preventable harm.  Not only did the THA board recommit to their goal, but they took an immense step forward and agreed to have the HAI data submitted to the TCPS unblinded when reported at THA board meetings. This declaration of ownership and accountability opens the door to seek help where we are struggling and share lessons learned where we are succeeding.

Furthermore, the board pledged 100% participation in the Partnership for Patients program.  Partnership for Patients is a new public-private partnership that will help improve the quality, safety, and affordability of health care for all Americans.  The Partnership for Patients brings together leaders of major hospitals, employers, physicians, nurses and patient advocates along with state and federal governments in a shared effort to make hospital care safer, more reliable, and less costly.  If your facility has not yet made this pledge, please do so today at Join Partnership for Patients.
