There have been multiple benefits identified related to bedside reporting including: increasing the safety of hand off, keeping patients and families informed, and creating an environment of trust among patients and staff. The learner will identify steps to initiate bedside shift report. The learner will review a shift report tool designed to facilitate thorough, but necessary information sharing. The learner will review tools to assist in monitoring effectiveness of the bedside reporting process related to patient and family perception of the hand off. Results showed improvement in the overall care provided on any medical/surgical/telemetry unit. A variation of this method has also been noted as successful in the emergency department, ICU, same day surgery, post partum, and GYN units.
