Striving To Get It Right

Director of Surgical Services - Cookeville Regional Medical Center

To provide the staff with tools to work safely and efficiently; each patient, each encounter. To have an effective means of communication during procedures performed in our facility, we implemented the WHO checklist in Surgical Services in April, 2010. We educated the staff and physicians with articles, videos, and a video using our own staff on performing a correct time out using the WHO checklist. We developed a large grease board to place in each OR Suite. The checklist gives us the opportunity to stop, discuss, and communicate the needs of the patient with each person participating in the care of the patient. The process is ever changing and everyone must be educated about the importance and value of communication. The checklist is a simple invaluable tool for the OR to reach that goal.
