Orientation Pathway: Aligning Excellence with Outcomes

The orientation pathway that existed prior to the implementation of our restructured program, based on Patricia Benner's "From Novice to Expert: Excellence and Power in Clinical Nursing Practice", consisted of a competency checklist. Clinical exposure was preceptor-dependent and lacking in structure, creating an inconsistency in the orientation experience and outcomes. The purpose of this project was to create a formalized and cohesive orientation process grounded within a theoretical framework with clearly defined outcomes and expectations. Group collaboration with representation from various specialty areas was utilized to adapt the curriculum to suit the needs of each individual area while maintaining the integrity of the universal content applicable to all areas. A primary evolutionary piece of this program was the involvement and support of nursing leadership, from the executive to the front-line level, in conjunction with nursing educators to ensure successful development, implementation, and ongoing oversight.
