The initial goal of the project was to create a healing environment in the ICU through open visitation while increasing patient/ family satisfaction and improving communication with nursing staff and physicians. A new open visiting policy, including a visiting contract, was instated via a committee of staff nurses. Surveys of nursing staff, respiratory therapists, and families were taken before and three months after visiting policy change.
