Medication Management Process Redesign
Director of Pharmacy - Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center
Pharmacy Manager - Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center
Goals for this long range project included the following: Improve medication safety for FSRMC patients, increase efficiency in the inpatient pharmacy, and increase throughput. The FSRMC Pharmacy department has undergone tremendous changes in recent years with the development of outpatient oncology centers, the addition of a home infusion department and employee pharmacy, and expansion of clinical pharmacy services. However, the inpatient pharmacy distribution processes had not received evaluation in many years. Lean Healthcare methodology was used to address each project with a problem statement, goal statement, project scope, deliverables, and identified team members. Implementation/Control plans for each of the ten projects were used. Seven types of waste (Waste of Correction, Waste of Overproduction, Waste of Motion, Waste of Waiting, Waste of Inventory, Waste of Processing, and Waste of Not Using Employees’ Creativity) were examined and reduced. Lean tools such as value stream mapping, operational method sheets, process balancing, visual controls, 5S, and PDSA were utilized. Staff is now engaged in providing ideas to improve processes. All of these projects synergistically have improved pharmacy distribution and clinical services to provide more efficient and safer patient care.
